My cat has a cold

30 October 2021

Does your cat sneeze, snuffle, have a runny nose or weeping eyes? Does he eat less, have a stuffy nose, seem tired? Does he seem feverish? Like you, he may have caught a “cold”, which is more commonly called coryza or rhinotracheitis in our felines. This disease of the upper respiratory tract has several causes; bacterial or more often viral. The main, and most severe infectious agent of this disease is feline herpesvirus type 1 (FeHV-1). Two other pathogens can be implicated: feline calicivirus (FCV) and the bacterium Chlamydophila felis.

Similar to flu in people, this illness is never trivial. Even if a vigorous adult cat manages to clear cat flu without too much hassle, the consequences can be serious in very young animals, elderly animals, or those with other concurrent illnesses. Fortunately, there are vaccines against these microbes and your veterinarian will work with you to establish the vaccination schedule adapted to your companion’s lifestyle.

Depending on the causative agent, the symptoms can be different: watery eyes, gingivitis, cough, sneezing, loss of appetite, and lethargy. In serious cases, veterinary medical treatment or even hospitalization is necessary. You can help your cat to overcome flu by improving his comfort, such as by cleaning his eyes with a suitable solution, unblocking his nose, and by modifying his respiratory environment with baths to help release respiratory mucous (also called nebulising or inhalations). In this case, some essential oils can benefit cats. However, cats have a different metabolism than ours, and some essential oils can be dangerous for them so always seek advice from your veterinarian before giving them to your cat.

In the MP Labo product line, you will find solutions to help your cat overcome his illness as well as information on how to manage cat flu in your feline friend. This disease should not be taken lightly, it is very contagious in the feline species and can spread quickly between cats. So, if you have any doubts, questions or if your cat’s general condition appears to be poor, do not hesitate to seek the advice of your veterinarian.
