Essential oils for cats

Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils. Their cells lack an enzyme called glucuronosyltransferase that is essential in the degradation and elimination of phenols and other molecules present in certain plants. However, this does not mean all essential oils are contraindicated for cats. Mostly used in inhalations, some can be very useful in the treatment of the respiratory issues associated with cat flu. This administration methid eliminates discharge by thinning it and brings respiratory comfort by fighting bronchial spasms.

Among essential oils, some are very interesting in the treatment of the respiratory issues associated with cat flu:

  • myrtle: anti-infectious and expectorant properties that help to evacuate bronchial discharges and act as an antispasmodic. It is used to fight sinusitis  and bronchitis.

  • Maritime pine: anti catarrhal properties (inflammation that engenders an increased discharge of mucus), anti-infectious, expectorant and antispasmodic. It also stimulates the immune system.

  • Tea tree (melaleuca): anti-infectious, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It helps the action of certain antibiotics.

  • Bitter orange tree: soothing and antispasmodic  properties.
