Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils. Their cells lack an enzyme called glucuronosyltransferase that is essential in the degradation and elimination of phenols and other molecules present in certain plants. However, this does not mean all essential oils are contraindicated for cats. Mostly used in inhalations, some can be very useful in the treatment of the respiratory issues associated with cat flu.
