Advices from our vets
There are multiple causes of constipation. In cats that are older or affected by certain illnesses, intestinal transit is slowed. Physical activity, along with water intake also affects transit. Constipation can arise as a result of having ingested pieces of bone. A diet that is balanced and sufficiently rich in certain types of fibers is essential for evacuation of stools. Hairballs can induce vomitting, as well as slow transit. There are also causes that are external to the digestive tract, such as pregnancy in females. Excess weight and kidney diseases can also lead to constipation. Finally, in some cases, it’s the litter that’s the issue! It possible that it (substrate, placement, cleanliness, or the fact of having to share with another animal) does not suit your cat. In this case, it is important to make sure that your cat is urinating normally!
