Feline Upper Respiratory Infection (URI), often called "cat flu," is a very common respiratory disease in cats. While it is usually mild, it can lead to serious complications if the animal is not treated promptly. Learn to recognize this condition, its causes, and the steps to protect your feline friend.
What Is Feline Upper Respiratory Infection?
Feline upper respiratory infection (URI) is a group of viral and bacterial infections affecting the upper respiratory tract. This disease is typically caused by three main agents:
- Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1): Causes inflammation of the nose, eyes, and throat.
- Caliciviruses: Often responsible for mouth ulcers and respiratory inflammation.
- Bacteria such as Chlamydophila felis : Can complicate infections with severe conjunctivitis.
Symptoms and Signs to Watch For
A cat with feline coryza may show nasal and ocular discharge, frequent sneezing, loss of appetite, lethargy, coughing, or breathing difficulties. It may also have a fever, mouth ulcers, or conjunctivitis.
Kittens, older cats, or those with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable.
Prevention and Management
Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your cat from feline viral rhinotracheitis. While it doesn’t guarantee total immunity, it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms if infected and lowers the risk of transmission.
If your cat shows signs of feline upper respiratory infection, consult a vet promptly. Treatment may include:
- antibiotics to treat bacterial infections,
- steam inhalations to clear the airways,
- appetizing meals to offset loss of appetite.
A Healthy Environment for Prevention
Keep your cat’s environment clean and stress-free, as this weakens their natural defenses. Also limit contact with unvaccinated cats, especially in shelters or boarding facilities. Feline coryza spreads mainly through direct contact between cats or indirectly via contaminated objects, such as food bowls or litter boxes.
By acting quickly, you can help your feline overcome this condition and restore their full health.
