Plants That Support Kidney Health

Plants That Support Kidney Health

Our four-legged companions' kidney health is crucial to their overall well-being. Beyond tailored veterinary care, there are natural steps pet owners can take to support their dogs' and cats' kidney function. Among these, certain plants can benefit renal health.

The Dandelion

Dandelion is a widely used plant to support renal health in dogs and cats. Dandelion roots are rich in compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and sterols, which have detoxifying properties. By increasing urine production, dandelion can help eliminate toxins and waste from the body, thereby easing the workload on the kidneys.

Burdock

Burdock is a plant that provides valuable support for kidney health. Its roots are rich in inulin, polyphenols, and essential fatty acids, which help modulate inflammation and have diuretic and detoxifying effects. By promoting the elimination of toxins from the body, burdock may help prevent kidney damage.

Orthosiphon

Orthosiphon, also known as Java tea, is a plant traditionally used for kidney health. Its leaves contain flavonoids, phenolic acids, and saponins, which promote urine production and help modulate inflammation. By stimulating urine output, orthosiphon may assist in eliminating toxins from the body and relieving kidney congestion.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo is a plant renowned for its vasodilatory and inflammation-modulating properties. While it is most commonly associated with brain health and blood circulation, ginkgo may also offer benefits for kidney health. It can notably promote better blood flow around and within this organ.

Blueberry Leaf

Blueberry leaf, for its part, contains compounds such as anthocyanosides and tannins, which have inflammation-modulating, antioxidant, and diuretic properties. This leaf may help reduce inflammation in the urinary tract and prevent kidney infections, while also protecting the kidneys from damage caused by free radicals.

Plants can be valuable allies in maintaining your dog's and cat's kidney health. There are complementary foods specifically formulated to support canine and feline kidney health, either in a preventive or enhanced way. Talk to your vet about it.
