Leaving my pet in boarding: how can I help them cope?

Leaving my pet in boarding: how can I help them cope?

The holidays are coming up or an unexpected trip requires you to leave your dog or cat at a boarding facility? Even though these places are often very well-organized and caring, this separation can be a difficult time for both you and your four-legged friend.

Luckily, with a little foresight and a few tips, you can help them get through this time more easily.

  1. Visit the boarding facility beforehand

If possible, arrange a visit to the boarding facility before your pet’s stay. This will allow you to meet the people who will care for your animal, explore the environment, and ensure it’s a reassuring, clean, and suitable place for their needs. Some facilities even offer “trial days” for a smooth first introduction.

  1. Keep Familiar Landmarks

To help reduce stress, consider leaving a few familiar items at the boarding facility: their bed, a toy, a blanket, or even a piece of clothing with your scent. These elements provide a comforting sense of continuity that can truly make all the difference.

  1. Gently Prepare Them for Separation

In the days leading up to your departure, gradually get your pet used to being alone a little more or being looked after by someone else. This will help them adapt more easily to the change in environment and routine.

  1. Naturally Support Their Emotional Well-Being

Some animals adapt quickly, while others may be more sensitive to changes. In such cases, an emotional well-being supplement for dogs and cats can be a real helping hand.

By fostering a calmer attitude and better adaptation to the environment and others, it can make your companion’s stay at the kennel more enjoyable. However, it’s best to start a few days before departure and continue throughout their stay. Of course, this doesn’t replace your presence, but it can truly help them get through this period more peacefully.

  1. Trust… and stay connected

First times can be tougher—that’s normal. But animals are often more resilient than we think. Check if the boarding facility can send you updates during their stay (a message, a photo, etc.): it’ll put your mind at ease and help you enjoy your time away from them more peacefully.

By preparing this separation carefully, you give your pet the best conditions to experience this moment gently. And you? You’ll leave with greater peace of mind, knowing you’ve supported them in the best possible way.
