Plants That Support Liver Health

Plants That Support Liver Health

Some plants, used since time immemorial, continue to prove their worth—now backed by scientific studies. Among the plants beneficial for liver health, these are likely the most well-documented in scientific literature.

Milk Thistle: The Liver’s Ally

Used since antiquity, this herbaceous plant commonly found around the Mediterranean is the liver’s quintessential ally. Thanks to its high silymarin and flavonoid content, milk thistle supports liver cell protection and tissue regeneration. It reduces the production of pro-inflammatory molecules and boasts significant antioxidant properties. It also acts on the gallbladder by promoting bile flow. The beneficial effects of milk thistle on hepatobiliary health are backed by numerous scientific publications, as well as official bodies such as the World Health Organization.

Plants with Antioxidant Properties: Turmeric and Artichoke

These two culinary plants prove to be powerful antioxidants. Turmeric, a cousin of ginger, was once used as a natural food preservative. Today, it is recognized for its protective activity against inflammation. Turmeric also limits the effects of hepatic toxins and stimulates bile production. As for artichoke, it is known as THE green vegetable ally of the liver: it protects hepatic tissue and supports its regeneration. It also stimulates gallbladder emptying.

Desmodium: Detoxifying and Protective

Native to Africa, desmodium is particularly renowned for its ability to normalize elevated transaminase levels—an enzyme whose levels can be measured in the blood in cases of liver damage, among others. It thus supports liver protection and regeneration. It also helps detoxify the body.

Fumitory for Biliary Function Support

This easy-to-grow herbaceous plant, found naturally throughout France, has been used since Ancient Greece. The variety that emits a smoky scent is also nicknamed "jaundice herb." Fumitory helps regulate bile flow, supports biliary comfort, and contributes to liver tissue protection. It is also recognized for its antioxidant properties.
