Preparing for Your Puppy’s Arrival

Preparing for Your Puppy’s Arrival

Just a few more days to wait—your puppy will soon be with you. Here are some tips to help you prepare for their arrival!

Prepare everything they’ll need before they arrive home, including their food

To avoid any stress—especially the back-and-forth car rides—once you have your puppy, it’s a good idea to prepare everything you need before picking them up from their former home. Ideally, you should get:

  • A basket along with hot water bottles (to keep them warm during the first nights)
  • A collar and a leash
  • A bowl for their food and a second one for water
  • A bag of the kibble they usually eat
  • Toys, suitable for their age and later their size
  • Treats (low-calorie options are available)
  • Grooming products and a brush, both tailored to their skin and coat type

Find out in advance about their eating habits. What do they eat? In what quantities and how many meals per day? To support their digestive system, which may still be delicate, it’s best to maintain their usual diet during the first few days—or even the first few weeks—after their arrival.

Create his own little space just for him

Dogs need a quiet space to rest, and this spot shouldn’t be in a high-traffic area. Set up their new bed or a large cushion there—and why not a plush toy? Just make sure to choose a pet-safe plush to avoid any risk of tearing or ingestion.

Be patient for the first releases

In puppies, the immune system is not yet fully developed, and the vaccination protocol—even if already started—remains incomplete. As a result, they are not protected against infectious diseases. To safeguard their health, it’s best to limit social interactions during the first few weeks to reduce the risk of transmission. However, if you have an older, fully vaccinated dog in your circle, you can certainly arrange a meeting with your new companion. This vulnerable phase is also the ideal time for socialization.
