Descaling

Descaling

Dental scaling is a common procedure in veterinary medicine. It aims to remove tartar buildup on teeth, helping to prevent periodontal disease and promote good oral health.

Procedure Overview

Dental scaling is performed under general anesthesia to ensure the animal's safety and allow for a thorough cleaning. The teeth are carefully scaled using an ultrasonic device. A continuous stream of water is sprayed on the teeth to rinse and cool them. X-rays may be taken to assess the condition of the teeth beneath the gums. One or more teeth may need to be extracted. Once the tartar is removed and all treatments are complete, your veterinarian will polish your pet's teeth.

Pre-Consultation Blood Test

Before the procedure, your vet may perform a blood test to assess your pet’s overall health. This exam is essential as it ensures they will tolerate anesthesia well.

Scaling Frequency

The frequency of dental scaling depends on various factors such as genetic predisposition, diet, and at-home dental care. Some animals may require annual scaling, while others may need it less frequently. You can take certain steps to reduce the risk of tartar buildup and thus decrease the need for scaling.

Post-Scaling Care

After scaling, your vet may recommend specific at-home dental care—such as tooth brushing and using suitable dental products—if you aren’t already doing so. A proper diet may also be advised to support oral hygiene. Regular check-ups with your vet are key to monitoring your pet’s dental health and catching any emerging issues.
