The Importance of Diet on Skin and Coat Quality in Dogs and Cats

The Importance of Diet on Skin and Coat Quality in Dogs and Cats

The skin is the body's largest organ, accounting for 12 to 24% of an animal's weight, and covering nearly a square meter in a dog weighing around thirty kilograms. It’s therefore no surprise that diet—both in quality and quantity—can impact this organ, and that deficiencies may lead to issues far beyond mere appearance.

Key Nutrients for Healthy Skin and Coat

Among macronutrients, proteins play a crucial role. They provide amino acids, including sulfur-containing amino acids, which are essential for skin and coat structure. These are the main components of collagen, which gives skin its elasticity and strength, and keratin, which contributes to the effectiveness of the skin barrier. Lipids are also important; they make up the bulk of cell membranes and, in the skin, significantly enhance the skin barrier’s effectiveness. Among lipids, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help maintain healthy skin, modulate inflammatory mechanisms, and promote a shiny, soft coat.

Vitamins and minerals are equally involved. Vitamin A is essential for cell renewal, as is vitamin D, which also contributes to natural defenses. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, while B vitamins and biotin are indispensable cofactors for the synthesis of various skin components such as ceramides, keratin, and collagen. Among minerals, zinc plays a role in synthesis, protection against free radicals, and immune defense mechanisms.

Nutritional Imbalance-Related Disorders

Poor or inadequate nutrition can lead to skin problems in our pets. A deficiency in essential fatty acids results in dry, flaky skin, a dull coat, and brittle fur. When vitamins and minerals are lacking, biological processes are disrupted, the skin barrier may become less effective, and infections or inflammation—often manifesting as itching—can develop. Conversely, these nutritional benefits can be harnessed to address individual sensitivities and enhance skin and coat quality in cases of dermatological disorders or diseases.

Skin quality and coat beauty are directly influenced by diet. However, some dogs and cats have increased needs, requiring higher amounts of beneficial nutrients. This is especially true for certain dermatological conditions, to help correct imbalances and support the medical treatments prescribed by your veterinarian.
