When to Use "Biotics" for Dogs or Cats?

When to Use "Biotics" for Dogs or Cats?

The gut microbiota plays a key role in the overall health of dogs and cats. To support its balance, prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics are now widely used. But in which situations is their use truly relevant? Here are the main indications, to be adapted for each individual.

  1. For Daily Use, to Support a Balanced Microbiome

In certain transition or change situations, administering pre-, pro-, or postbiotics can help support the animal in maintaining a stable microbiota. This can be useful:

  • during adoption or weaning,
  • in case of dietary changes,
  • Before a trip, a break, or a stressful event,
  • for active or working dogs subjected to unusual exertion.

In these contexts, the microbiota is often put to the test. Providing it with the right support can help limit the onset of stress-related or adjustment-induced digestive and skin issues.

  1. During or After Physiological or Medical Stress

Some episodes directly weaken the gut flora, which can result in diarrhea or irregular bowel movements. This may include:

  • an course of antibiotics (which directly disrupts the flora),
  • a surgery, a hospital stay, a recovery period,
  • chronic stress (in an anxious, isolated, or elderly animal),
  • periods of gestation or lactation, when the body’s needs are heightened.

In such cases, supporting the microbiota may promote recovery, help limit treatment side effects, and contribute to overall health maintenance.

  1. For Confirmed Digestive Disorders

This is probably the most well-known use. In cases of acute or chronic diarrhea, digestive discomfort, loose stools, or flatulence, the microbiota is often imbalanced.

Administering specific fibers (prebiotics), live bacteria (probiotics), or inactivated bacteria (postbiotics) can help:

  • Promote a balanced microbiota,
  • support the intestinal barrier,
  • reduce the recurrence of digestive episodes.

In animals with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, targeted and sustained support can be part of a comprehensive management strategy.

  1. Supportive Care in Extra-Digestive Diseases

The microbiome doesn’t just impact the digestive system. We now speak of the gut-skin axis, gut-brain axis, and even gut-immunity axis. As such, supporting the microbiome can also be considered:

  • In certain dermatological conditions (atopy, chronic pruritus),
  • in anxious or stressed animals (thanks to the gut-brain axis),
  • in fragile individuals or those frequently ill, to help strengthen natural defenses.

In these situations, postbiotics may be of particular interest due to their stability, safety, and proven efficacy, even in sensitive animals.

Conclusion

Using pre-, pro-, post-, or symbiotics in dogs or cats means targeting a central pillar of their health: the microbiome. But for this approach to be truly effective, it must be targeted, thoughtful, and tailored to the animal’s specific context. Whether to maintain optimal health, support treatment, or address digestive or systemic disorders, these solutions can play a key role in a holistic wellness strategy. Talk to your vet about it.
